(2R, 3S)-N-Benzyloxycarbonyl-3-amino-3-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-2-hydroxypropionic acid methyl ester (>12.2 g, 33.3 mmol maximum) was dissolved in 750 mL ethanol. The flask was purged with argon and palladium on carbon (2 g, 10% wt) was added. The suspension was then purged, filled with hydrogen, and stirred 16 h. The suspension was piirged with argon, filtered through celite and concentrated in vacuo to give (2R,3S)-3-amino-3-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-2-hydroxypropionic acid methyl ester from trans-3,4-difluorocinnamic acid methyl ester).
