Procedure
1.10 g (3.5 mmol) of 4-cyano-5-diethoxymethyl-1-(4-chloro-1-methyl-5-methylsulfonyl-3-pyrazolyl)pyrazole are dissolved in 20 ml of 1,4-dioxane and, after addition of 2 ml of 50% strength sulfuric acid, heated under reflux for 2 hours. The solution is cooled and the volatile components are then distilled off, and the residue taken up in dichloromethane and extracted with water and sodium bicarbonate solution. Drying with sodium sulfate and concentration using a rotary evaporator gives 0.95 g (86%) of the desired aldehyde which can be reacted without any further purification.
