A solution of 0.397 g of 4-tert-butyl hydrogen 3(S)-[(tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ylidene)ethyl]-2(R)-isobutylsuccinate in 10 ml of methanol was shaken in a hydrogen atmosphere in the presence of 0.196 g of 10% palladium on charcoal catalyst until no further uptake of hydrogen was observed. The catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. There was obtained 0.331 g of 4-tert-butyl hydrogen 3(S)-[(tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)ethyl]-2(R)-isobutylsuccinate in the form of a colourless gum.
