Procedure

0.5 g (10 mmol) of sodium borohydride dissolved in 5 ml of water was added portionwise to the solution of 5.0 g (24 mmol) of 2-methyl-4-(1,2,2-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-yl)but-2-enal in 20 ml of ethanol maintained at 0° C. Stirring was continued for 1 hour at 0-5° C., then acetone was added to destroy the excess of hydride. The reaction mixture was poured on 100 ml of water, extracted with 2×100 ml of ether, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated in vacuo. Kugelrohr distillation of the residue at 160° C./0.1 Torr gave 4.5 g (90% yield) of 2-methyl-4-(1,2,2-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-yl)but-2-en-1-ol.
