Reaction Steps
A solution of 1.0 g of 2(R)-[3-amino-1(S)-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)propyl]-4-methylvaleric acid in 20 ml of dichloromethane was cooled to 5° C. under nitrogen and treated with 1.3 ml of triethylamine and a solution of 0.54 g of benzoyl chloride in 10 ml of dichloromethane. The mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and then the solvent was evaporated. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed with 2M aqueous hydrogen chloride and water. Drying over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtration and evaporation of the solvent gave a pale yellow oil which was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel, using ethyl acetate/hexane (3:1), to give 0.78 g of 2(R)-[3-benzamido-1(S)-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)propyl]-4-methylvaleric acid in the form of a colorless oil.
