Procedure

5.6 g of potassium tert.butylate are placed in 42.5 ml of tert.butanol and 10.8 g of 1,1-dimethyl-4-propionyl-tetralin are added dropwise thereto. The mixture is stirred for 1 hour, cooled to 5° C. and 8.5 g of methyl iodide are added. The mixture is stirred for a further 3 hours, a further 4.2 g of methyl iodide are added, the cooling source is removed and the mixture is stirred for a further 15 hours. The bulk of the tert.butanol is then removed by evaporation, the residue is taken up in ether, washed neutral with water, dried over sodium sulphate, evaporated and distilled. There are obtained 6 g of 1,1,4-trimethyl-4-propionyl-tetralin of boiling point 79° C./0.05 mmHg; nD20 =1.5249; yield 52%. Odour: fruity, woody.
