Procedure

A mixture of 11.5 g of the product of Step B in 30 ml of dioxane and 25 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide was stirred for one hour in a water bath at 50° C. and was then iced for 10 minutes and vacuum filtered. The recovered precipitate was rinsed with 50% aqueous dioxane, with a 1-1 ether-dioxane mixture and then ether and was dried to obtain 11.05 g of the syn isomer of sodium 2-(2-tritylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-hydroxyimino-acetate. Treatment of the salt with aqueous methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid obtained the syn isomer of 2-(2-tritylamino-4-thiazolyl)-2-hydroxyimino-acetic acid.
