Procedure

Protected-piperazinoneacetyl-gly-phe-NHCH3, 10a, (6.71 g, 1.00×10-2 mole) in ethanol (100 ml) is hydrogenated in a Parr apparatus at 40 psi over 10% Pd/C (0.5 g). After the reaction has absorbed one equivalent of hydrogen, the catalyst is filtered and washed with ethanol. The filtrate is evaporated at reduced pressure, affording 11a.
