In a sealed glass tube is placed a solution of N-(2-hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamic acid methyl ester (4.3 g), isobutene (30 ml) and concentrated sulfuric acid (0.1 ml) in dichloromethane (20 ml) prepared at -50° C. to -60° C. The mixture is warmed slowly to room temperature and then left to stand for 17 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into aqueous 0.5% sodium hydroxide and extracted with dichloromethane. The extract is washed with water, dried and concentrated to give N-(2-t-butoxyethyl)dithiocarbamic acid methyl ester.
