N-(4-Benzyloxyphenyl)-5-methoxyisatoic anhydride [VIII; R=5--CH3O, R"=H, OR°=4--OCH2C6H5 ] was prepared from 2-(4-benzyloxyphenylamino)-5-methoxybenzoic acid and phosgene according to the procedure of Example 1, part (b), and was obtained in 79% yield as a colorless solid used directly in the next reaction.
