Reaction Steps
By a procedure analogous to that of Example 15, 10.2 g of methyl 4-(1-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-3-cyclohexene-1-carboxylate (Example 5) was aromatized to methyl 4-(1-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-indol-3-yl)benzoate [IV; R' and R"=CH3 ], m.p. 165°-166° C., and the latter hydrolyzed to yield 7.3 g (74%) of 4-(1-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-benzoic acid [IV; R'=CH3, R"=H], m.p. 235°-240° C. (from aqueous dioxane).
