To a solution of 0.90 g of 4-nitrobenzyl 7-ethyl-8-oxo-3-acetylthio-4,5-dithia-1-azabicyclo[4,2,0]oct-2-ene 2-carboxylate in 2 ml of dichloromethane was added, in one batch, a solution of 0.59 g of triphenylphosphine in 3 ml of dichloromethane. After 10 minutes, the reaction mixture was chromatographed directly on silica gel, eluting with ethyl acetate/hexane mixtures, to give the title compound as a yellow crystalline solid. (Yield 0.25 g)
