Procedure
A mixture of 160 g of 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-5-acetic acid and 230 ml of thionyl chloride is heated to boiling under reflux for 2.5 hours. After concentration of the mixture in vacuo, the residue is treated twice with 300 ml of dry benzene each time and in each case evaporated to dryness. 10,11-Dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-5-acetic acid chloride is obtained as a red-brown oil.
