Reaction Steps

A mixture of 13.96 g of 3-(o-aminobenzyl)-5-ethoxycarbonyl-1,2,4-triazole, 410 ml of methylene chloride and 9.19 g of 1,1'-carbonyldimidazole is stirred at room temperature for 2 days and filtered. The filtrate is washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, decolorized with charcoal, evaporated to a small volume and diluted with ether. The product is filtered off and recrystallized from tetrahydrofuran to give 2-ethoxycarbonyl-11H-1,2,4-triazolo[2,3-c][1,3]benzodiazepine-5(6H)-one, m.p. 216°-220° (intermediate 6/b).
