Procedure

400 mg (0.1 mmol) of 1-cyclopentylmethyl-7-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (Example 419, Step 2) was dissolved in 20 ml of methanol with a catalytic amount of Pd/C and stirred overnight under H2 atmosphere (60 psi). Filtaration followed by evaporation of the solvent under vacuo gave 0.4 g of 1-cyclopentylmethyl-7-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester as a thick liquid.
