Procedure
To a suspension of 0.84 g (4.1 mmol) of the above carbamate in a 1:2 mixture of H2O:ethylene glycol (4.5 mL) was added 1.0 g (25 mmol) of sodium hydroxide as a solid in one portion. The slurry was heated to 110° C. for 15 h during which time a solid precipitated out of solution. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and poured into a solution of 2N HCl (30 mL). The mixture was washed with Et2O and the aqueous layer made basic to pH 12 by addition of 6N NaOH. The aqueous phase was washed with CH2Cl2 and the combined organic phase was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide 0.046 g (8%) of 1-phenyl -cyclopropylamine as a clear oil. m/z cacld. C9H12N [M+H]+: 134.20. Found: 133.90.
