Procedure
To a solution of 3-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid (1-2) (5.0 g, 26 mmol, 1 equiv) in pyridine (50 mL) at −10° C. under nitrogen was added ethyl chloroformate (10 mL, 11 g, 100 mmol, 4.0 equiv) dropwise over 1 h. The resulting solution was stirred from −10° C. to 23° C. over 20 h. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the solid residue was suspended in water (100 mL) with stirring for 1 h. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried to yield 2-ethoxy-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-4H-naphtho[2,3-d][1,3]oxazin-4-one (1-3) as a yellow solid. LRMS m/z (M+H) 246.4 found, 246.1 required.
