Reaction Steps

Methyl 2-(chlorosulfonyl)-benzoate (2.25 g, 8.73 mmol) in methylene chloride (20 mL) was added dropwise to a solution of ethyl 3-aminobenzoate (1.44 g, 8.73 mmol) and triethylamine (1.21 mL, 8.73 mmol) in methylene chloride (10 mL) at 0 C. The reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was washed with water (20 mL), aqueous HCl (1 M, 20 mL) and aqueous NaOH (1 M, 20 mL), dried (MgSO4—, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give an orange oil. Trituration with ethyl ether gave N-(3′-carboethoxyphenyl)-2-(carbomethoxy)benzenesulfonamide as white solid. 1H NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.31, t, J=6.0 Hz, 3H, 4.00, s, 3H, 4.29, q, J=6.0 Hz, 2H, 7.23-7.61, m, 5H, 7.66-7.92, m, 3H, 8.26, br s, 1H.
