Using a method substantially in accordance with the method of 3-(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)-4-cyano-5-trifluoromethyl-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester starting with the compound, 4-cyano-5-iodo-3-(2′-methylsulfanyl-biphenyl-4-yl)-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester gives the title compound: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.82-7.47 (m, 8H), 4.27 (q, 2H, J=7.2 Hz), 2.38 (s, 3H), 1.22 (t, 3H, J=7.3 Hz).
