PBr3 (8.14 g, 0.03 mol) was added drop by drop at 0° C. to a solution of 3-fluoro-4-(3-hydroxypropoxy)-benzonitrile (5.5 g, 0.028 mol, from step (i) above in carbon tetrachloride (50 ml) and stirred at room temperature overnight under nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction was quenched with water, and extracted with dichloromethane. Organic layer was washed with water, brine, dried over sodium sulfate and solvent evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography over silica gel using 6% ethyl acetate in petroleum ether as eluent to yield (4.3 g) of the title compound as a liquid.
