Procedure

A mixture of 5-benzyloxy-2-hydroxymethyl-4-pyrone (prepared from Kojic acid by the method of D. Erol, J. Med. Chem., 1994, 29, 893) (9.7 g, 40 mmol), concentrated aqueous (880) ammonia (100 mL), and ethanol (20 mL) was heated to reflux overnight. The mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature then filtered. The resultant solid was washed with ether and dried in vacuo (5.9 g); MS (APCl+) m/z 232 (MH+).
