Ethyl ester (176) (1.08 g, 4.15 mmol) was saponified with 1 N NaOH in THF and EtOH to give 0.97 g (˜100%) of the title compound (177) as a yellow oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 2.41 (dd, J1=16.9 Hz, J2=5.8 Hz, 1H), 2.50-2.70 (m, 2H), 3.00-3.15 (m, 2H), 7.15-7.25 (m, 3H), 7.27-7.33 (m, 2H). LCMS (ESI): m/z 231 (M−H)−.
