Reaction Steps
A mixture of 15.8 g of 2-(2-pyridyl)-1-(4-quinolyl)-ethanone and 25 ml of 85% hydrazine hydrate in 250 ml of diethylene-glycol is heated at 160° C. for 30 minutes. After cooling to 60° C., 22 g of sodium hydroxide pellets are added and the mixture is heated at 160° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is diluted with water, then extracted 3 times, each by 300 ml of methylene chloride. The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. 12.5 g are thus obtained of 4-[-2-(2-pyridyl)-ethyl]-quinoline in the form of a lacquer.
