See step d) of example H2 starting from 6-amino-7-chloro-1H-benzoimidazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester and 2 equivalents of a solution of NaOH 1 N. The reaction is stirred for 18 hours at 70° C. After evaporation, the residue is suspended in EtOAc and H2O, then the aqueous phase is acidified to pH 2-3 with concentrated HCl. The aqueous phase is coevaporated with toluene and the crude reddish solid is used directly in the next step without further purification. LC/MS: 212/214 (M+1)+
