A mixture of 2-tert-butylaniline (0.50 g, 3.35 mmol) and 1-(diphenylmethyl)-3-azetidinylmethanesulfonate (1.60 g, 5.03 mmol) was heated at 100° C. for 15 min. After this toluene (5.0 ml) was added to the resulting yellow solid, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, partitioned between THF and water and separated. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography (silica gel, 90:10 to 80:20 heptane/ethyl acetate) to provide 1-benzhydryl-N-(2-tert-butylphenyl)azetidin-3-amine (0.73 g, 59%) as a yellow gum-like substance.
