Reaction Steps
To a suspension of sodium hydride (60% in mineral oil, 1.75 g, 43.7 mmol) in THF (30 mL) a solution of 2-methoxyethanol (3.30 g, 43.7 mmol) in anhydrous THF (10 mL) was slowly added. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes and a solution of 4-chloro-2-methyl-[1,10]phenanthroline (2.00 g, 8.8 mmol) in anhydrous THF (20 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 18 hours and the solvent was removed in a rotary evaporator. The residue was treated with methylene choride (100 mL) and saturated NaHCO3 (100 mL) and transferred to a separatory funnel. The organic layer was washed with brine (100 mL), dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was washed with hexane and purified by flash chromatography (SiO2, MeOH/DCM, 1:30) to afford the pure product as a light yellow solid (1.17 g, 50%).
