Procedure
3-(N-Methylanilino)propyl p-toluenesulfonate (21.2 g, 0.0665 mole) and 2-picoline-N-oxide (7.3 g, 0.0665 mole) were heated together on a steam bath for 1/2 hour. The mixture was allowed to cool, then dissolved in methanol (50 ml). A solution of sodium perchlorate (9.3 g, 0.076 mole) in water (12 ml) was added and the mixture chilled. The solid which separated was collected and washed with a little 90% methanol, then with ether. The yield was 14.3 g (60%), m.p. 111°-113° C.
