A mixture of 3-(4-chlorophenoxy)-2-methyl-2-propene (4.5 g, 0.032 mol) and 0.158 g of copper powder is heated at 110° for 30 min; then 2.78 g ethyl diazoacetate (0.025 mol) is added dropwise, keeping the temperature at 110°. After the addition is complete (approximately 30 min), the mixture is stirred at 110° until nitrogen evolution is complete. The mixture is cooled, diluted with ether, filtered and concentrated. Distillation of the residue yields ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenoxy)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate.
