The ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenoxy)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate (l.5 g) is hydrolyzed by heating under reflux with 10% potassium hydroxide in a mixture of 20% water and 80% ethyl alcohol for 1 hr and letting stand at 25° overnight. The solution is cooled and solvent is removed in vacuo. The residue is diluted with water and extracted with ether. The aqueous phase is then acidified with aqueous HCl and extracted with ether. The organic phase is washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent removed in vacuo to give 3-(4-chlorophenoxy)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid.
