Procedure

A mixture of 30 parts of 3-[(2-amino-4-chlorophenyl)amino]-1-propanol, 44.8 parts of sodium α-hydroxybenzeneethanesulfonate and 120 parts of ethanol is stirred and refluxed for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture is evaporated and the residue is taken up in water. The oily product is extracted with trichlormethane. The extract is dried, filtered and evaporated, yielding 5-chloro-2-(phenylmethyl)-1H-benzimidazole-1-propanol as a residue.
