Reaction Steps
To a solution of diethyl (1H-indol-1-yl)malonate (0.02 mole) in 25 ml of absolute ethanol is added 25 ml (0.02 mole) of 0.8 N ethanolic potassium hydroxide. This solution is stirred overnight. The solvent is flash evaporated and the residue is dissolved in 25 ml of water and washed twice with 50 ml of ether. The aqueous phase is separated, acidified to pH of 2.5, saturated with sodium chloride and extracted twice with 80 ml of ether. The ether extracts are combined, dried and evaporated to give the monoethyl ester of (1H-indol-1-yl)malonic acid.
