Procedure
6-Amino-1-methyl-3-propyl-2,4(1H,3H)pyrimidinedione (V. Papesch and F. F. Schroeder, J.Org.Chem. 1951, 16 1879) (5.53 g, 27.5 mmol) was dissolved in hot 95% ethanol (20 ml)-water (120 ml). Sodium nitrite (2.32 g) and glacial acetic acid (2.4 ml) were added. The resulting mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature. Orange-pink crystals were filtered off and dried at 50° C. under vacuum to give purple crystals of 6-amino-1-methyl-5-nitroso-3-propyl-2,4 (1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione (2.92 g, 80%); mp 250°dec.
