Procedure
A solution of 14 g NaOH in 60 ml of water was added to a solution of 21 g of 5 in 600 ml ethanol. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours. The bulk of the ethanol was then evaporated and the residue poured into 1 liter of water. The mixture was acidified with 2N HCl and the product extracted with ether. The organic layer was dried and evaporated. This yielded 17.5 g of carboxylic acid 6 in the form of an oil; Rf =0.47 (toluene/ethyl acetate/ethanol/acetic acid 8/2/1/0 1).
