Reaction Steps
90 Parts by weight of xylitol (75 wt% aqueous solution), 42 parts by weight of benzaldehyde, 60 parts by weight of methanol, 6 parts by weight of conc. H2SO4 and 6 parts by weight of water were reacted with refluxing for two hours. After cooling, the solidified product was ground and washed with water and, then, neutralized with 10 wt% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution followed by washing with water and drying to obtain benzylidenexylitol.
