Procedure

A mixture of 46 parts of N-(4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)-α-methyl-3-pyridinemethanamine monohydrochloride and 400 parts of methanol is hydrogenated at normal pressure and at room temperature with 5 parts of Raney-nickel catalyst. After the calculated amount of hydrogen is taken up, the catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate is evaporated, yielding 41.5 parts (100%) of 4-chloro-N1 -[1-(3-pyridinyl)ethyl]-1,2-benzenediamine monohydrochloride as a residue.
