Procedure
3.2 g (0.01 mol) of 1-benzhydryl-2-mercapto-5-methoxycarbonyl-imidazole (Example 1a) were introduced into a mixture of 30 cc of water, 15 cc of methanol, 15 cc of methylene chloride, 10 cc of 2 N sodium hydroxide solution and 1.3 cc of methyl iodide. Stirring was continued for 30 minutes. During this time the temperature of the reaction mixture rose to 39° C. After cooling, 3 g (90% of the theory) of 1-benzhydryl-5-methoxycarbonyl-2-methylthio-imidazole, m.p. 118° C. were isolated from the organic phase.
