Procedure
2.9 g (0.01 mol) of 1-benzhydryl-5-methoxycarbonyl-imidazole (Example 8) and 25 cc of 50% methanolic formaldehyde solution were heated for 36 hours to 135° C. 3.15 g of 1-benzhydryl-2-hydroxymethyl-5-methoxycarbonyl-imidazole, m.p. 160° C., were obtained from the reaction mixture in an almost quantitative yield.
