| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Acetic Acid | HCID 176 | — |
| Reactant | Formic Acid | HCID 284 | — |
| Solvent | Methanol | HCID 887 | — |
| Product | Methyl Acetate | HCID 6584 | — |
| Product | Methyl formate | HCID 7865 | — |
Reaction Steps
Substitution of acetic acid or formic acid for the R1COOH does not provide the advantageous results described, and instead, with the aforedescribed single reaction system provides methyl formate or methyl acetate distilling off rather than methanol. These (methyl formate or methyl acetate), contrary to R1COOCH3, have lower boiling points than methanol and consequently are distilled off instead of methanol requiring new displacing acid and displacing acid ester disposal or hydrolysis of the displacing acid ester in a second process facility (reactor plus distillation means).
