Procedure

A solution of sodium hydroxide (100 mg) in water (5 ml) was added to a stirred solution of {4-[(5-phenyl-furan-2-carbonyl)-amino]-phenyl}-acetic acid ethyl ester (1) (75 mg, 0.214 mmoles) in ethanol (10 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was diluted with water (10 ml) and acidified to pH=2 with 1 M aqueous hydrochloric acid. The precipitate was collected, washed with water and the residue was triturated with cyclohexane to afford (2) (61.5mg) as a white solid. LC/MS System D; Rt=3.01 mins, m/z (ES−)=320 (M−H for C19H15NO4).
