A mixture of N-(4-nitrobenzyl)piperazine dihydrochloride (7.73 g, 26.3 mmol), 2-bromo-1-phenylpropan-1-one (5.94 ml, 39 mmol) and K2CO3 (12.7 g, 92 mol) was treated according to general preparation 2, then recrystallized with ethanol to give 85 g of N1-(4-nitrobenzyl)-N4-(1-benzoylethyl)piperazine dihydrochloride, yield 70%, mp 256-8° C., which was reduced by reductive iron in the similar procedure of Example 12, to give compound (IV-13), yield 65%, mp 244-246° C. (dec). M+ 323.
