A solution of 4-(2,3-dimethoxybenzoyl)pyridine (12) (2.10 g, 8.6 mmol) in MeOH (10 mL) is treated with 5% Rh/alumina (0.72 g). The mixture is hydrogenated in a Parr shaker at 55 psig for 22 hours. After filtration through Celite 7 filter aid, the filtrate is concentrated at reduced pressure to give the title compound (11) as a solid (2.0 g, 92% yield).
