A solution of 1-benzhydryl-3-methoxymethylene-azetidine (0.19 g, 0.88 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (20 mL) and 1N hydrogen chloride (10 mL) was refluxed overnight. The mixture was neutralized with saturated sodium bicarbonate and extracted with methylene chloride (3×50 mL). The combined-organic extracts were washed with water (3×50 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuum to afford 0.17 g of the title compound as a light yellow oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-D6): δ 3.2 (br, 4 H), 4.42 (s, 1 H), 7.13-7.18 (m, 2H), 7.23-7.27 (m, 4 H), 7.37-7.40 (m, 4 H).
