To a stirred solution of (1S)-1-(2-{[tert-butyl(diphenyl)silyl]oxy}ethyl)-3,4-dihydro-1H-2-benzopyran-6-carbaldehyde (0.97 g, 2.18 mmol) in ethanol (30 mL) was added sodium borohydride (0.116 g, 3.06 mmol) and the mixture stirred for 1.5 h at room temperature. The reaction was extracted from water into ethyl acetate, the combined organic extracts dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated in vacuo, to yield the title compound as a colourless oil.
