Procedure

A sample of 150 g. of 2-furyl-4,4,6-trimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine and 10 g. of solid sodium hydroxide were heated to 180° C. over a 2 hr. period. The resulting product was distilled under diminished pressure to yield 52 grams of 2-furyl-4,4,6-trimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine b2.0 120°-122° C., solidified during distillation; infrared spectrum, 3.06μ, NH, 6.20μ, C=N. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, solvent CDCl3 ; δ in ppm. 7.38 m, 1H; 6.90 m, 1H; 6.40 m, 1H; 3.55 m, 1H; 1.72 d of d's, 2H; 1.25 d, 3H; 1.20 s, 6H.
