Procedure
9.85 g of 3 (prepared as described in Example 3) was dissolved in 50 ml of dry methylene chloride. 15 ml of formic acetic anhydride (prepared by mixing the appropriate amounts of formic acid and acetic anhydride) was added. The mixture was allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in ether. The solution was washed with sodium bicarbonate solution, dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent evaporated to give 4, as a white crystalline solid, mp 129°-132° C.
