Procedure
To a solution of 0.75 g. of 5-amino-2-nitro-3-phenylbenzofuran in 5 ml. of pyridine is added 1 ml. of benzoyl chloride. The mixture is heated on a steam bath for about 1 hour, then decanted into 50 ml. of 2 N hydrochloric acid. A yellow residue forms which is recrystallized from a mixture of isopropanol, methanol and water to provide yellow crystals of 5-benzamido-2-nitro-3-phenylbenzofuran having the structure ##STR11##
