Reaction Steps

To a solution of 0.62 g. (0.00244mole) of 7-amino-2-nitro-3-phenylbenzofuran in 10 ml. of pyridine is added with stirring 0.3 g. of methanesulfonyl chloride. The reaction is stirred at about 20° C. for about 16 hours, then poured into ice water acidified with hydrochloric acid. This solution is extracted with a mixture of diethyl ether and dichloromethane and the extracts are washed twice with water and then dried. The dried extracts are evaporated to provide a residue which is recrystallized twice from benzene with decolorizing charcoal to provide yellow solid 7-methanesulfonamido-2-nitro-3-phenylbenzofuran, m.p. 169°-171.5° C.
