Procedure

3.7 Parts of 2-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-carboxy-ethoxy)phenyl]-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-A]pyridin-3(2H)-one, 15 parts of chloroform and 1.2 parts of thionyl chloride were combined and refluxed for 3 hours. The reaction was stirred for an additional 12 hours at room temperature. Solvent and excess thionyl chloride were removed from the product by evaporation on a rotary evaporator at reduced pressure. 4.0 Parts of crude product were obtained and used in the next step without further purification.
