Procedure
A stirred mixture of 1 g. of 1-ethyl-1,2-dihydro-4-ethoxy-7-methyl-2-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (prepared as in Example 14) in 15 ml. of 20% aqueous sodium hydroxide containing 5 ml. of ethanol was heated under reflux for 4 hours. The mixture was cooled and was acidified with glacial acetic acid and was diluted with water. The precipitate which formed was collected, air dried and was recrystallized from ethanol to afford 0.3 g. of the title compound, m.p. 162°-5° C.
