Reaction Steps
In accordance with the above flowchart, a disodium benzene-1,3-disulfonate (1) is treated with sodium nitrate in concentrated sulfuric acid at 65° C. for several hours producing disodium 5-nitrobenzene-1,3-disulfonate (2), which is then reacted with thionyl chloride in dimethylformamide at reflux with crystallization from a boiling mixture of chloroform and carbon tetrachloride to give 5-nitro-1,3-benzenedisulfonyl chloride (3).
